Roundtable meeting at FPCCI Office, Karachi
Mr. Khalid A. Mirza, Chairman Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) met Mr. Sultan Ahmad Chawla, President FPCCI in Karachi on Saturday February 21 st , 2009. President FPCCI welcomed the visit of Chairman CCP Pakistan to Federation House and briefed about FPCCI.
Mr. Khalid A. Mirza, Chairman CCP informed the FPCCI that the CCP was established in October 2007. Its major aim is to provide a legal framework and to create a business environment to be based on healthy competition towards improving economic efficiency, developing competitiveness, and protecting consumers from anti-competitive practices.
Mr. Mirza said that the CCP puts major emphasis on its function of Advocacy and prohibits abuse of market dominance, anti-competitive agreements, deceptive market practices, and mergers of undertakings that substantially reduce competition. The role of CCP is to promote voluntary compliance and to give a competitive face to micro and macro economic policies in an organized fashion. To obtain evidence for unearthing secret cartels, the Competition Commission also has legal powers to conduct searches and inspections; moreover, CCP has its doors open and is willing to educate the public and private sectors about the norms of healthy competition.
Mr. Sultan Ahmad Chawla, President FPCCI appreciated the working of CCP and its efforts in providing a healthy business environment. He mentioned that FPCCI is willing to help CCP Pakistan to provide access to various industrial sectors as and when desired by CCP for the benefit of Trade & Industry.
Mr. Zakaria Usman, Mr. Mumtaz Ali Sheikh, Mr. Mansha Churra (Vice Presidents of FPCCI), Ms. Maleeha Bangash (Member Advocacy and Research CCP), Ms. Rahat Kaunain Hassan (Member Legal CCP), Mr. Amjad Rafi (FPCCI), Mr. Shakil Dhingra (Life Member FPCCI) and Mr. M. A. Lodhi (Secretary General FPCCI) were also present at the meeting.
